forgetting and remembering Haiti

Many remember with clarity that the January 12, 2010, Haiti suffered an earthquake of 6.9 magnitude on the Richter scale by taking before 300,000 people and over a million homeless.

Many note with dismay that a year later, Haiti has not only managed to make up that it has increased its already huge problems.

By removing a positive fraction between all the chaos, all that could be used to show in prime time the face of the country hardest hit and forgotten in America since before the earth tremble.

And if the country was receiving would punishment because he committed a fault . Eduardo Galeando

memory refreshed me last night rereading two of his Mirrors.

Here you reflected:

WHITE CURSE

black slaves Haiti tremendous beating handed to the army of Napoleon Bonaparte, and in 1804 the flag of the free rose over the ruins.

But Haiti was from the sink, a country in ruins. On the altar of French sugar plantations had been slain land and arms, and the calamities of war were exterminated one-third of the population.

The birth of independence and the death of slavery, black deeds were unforgivable humiliation for whites own the world. Eighteen

Napoleon's generals had been buried in the rebel island. The new nation, blood cubs, born condemned the blockade and loneliness: nobody bought, nobody sold, no one recognized her.

Having been unfaithful to the colonial master, Haiti was forced to pay huge compensation to France. That atonement for the sin of dignity, which was paying for nearly half a century, was the price that France won for diplomatic recognition.

Nobody recognized it. Neither the Gran Colombia of Simón Bolívar, although he owed everything. Ships, weapons and soldiers had given Haiti, with the sole condition that he free the slaves, an idea that the Liberator had not occurred. Then, when Bolivar won in their war of independence, refused Haiti invite the Congress of the new American nations.

Haiti remained a leper in the Americas.

Thomas Jefferson had warned from the beginning, we had to confine the plague on the island, because from there came the bad example.

fever, bad example, disobedience, chaos, violence. In South Carolina, the law allowed jail any black sailor, while his ship was in port, the risk that could spread the fever that threatened anti-slavery throughout the Americas. In Brazil, this fever was called Haitianism .

DIED MANY TIMES
SLAVERY
See all encyclopedia. Ask what was the first country to abolish slavery. The encyclopedia will respond: England.

is true that one day he changed his mind the British Empire, world champion of the slave trade, when warned that crunching numbers was not as profitable to sell human flesh. But London found that slavery was bad in 1807, and so unconvincing was the news that thirty years later was to be repeated twice.

is also true that the French Revolution had freed the slaves in the colonies, but the decree liberating, called immortal, died soon after killed by Napoleon Bonaparte.

The first free, truly free, was Haiti. Abolished slavery three years before England, in a night lit by the sun of the fires, while celebrating his newly won independence and recover your forgotten indigenous name.
